THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN BERRIEN COUNTY

There is a crisis in Berrien County surrounding legal services for defendants whose very lives are at risk in criminal courts, jails, and prisons. Racial discrimination remains a dominant feature of the criminal justice system in the United States and Michigan.

The State of Michigan disenfranchises more of its citizens as a result of criminal convictions than any other state in the country.

Our children are 35% of our population in Berrien County and 100% of our future! Where there is no vision, the people perish.
The Equal Justice Initiative of Michigan stated that by the year 2007 the government expecst 2,000,000 millions black people to be in prison. One out of three will be under government supervision under 30 years of age.

The Equal Justice Initiative of Michigan also stated that the he gap between black and white infant mortality is growing in Berrien County. Berrien county has the highest black infant death rate in the state. How large does the gap have to be? How many black infants must die before we act? Will someone please tell me?

I viewed the BANCO website today for the first time. I’m amazed, I must say. The amount of energy and enthusiasm is astonishing! I have never witnessed such vigor poured into a cause. The dedication and effort is something to be proud of. My amazement, though, is two fold. Though the effort is impressive, the cause bewilders me. You see, I am equally amazed at why an organization would push a cause of hatred and work so hard to tear down, rather than to build up.

I am saddened to see a group hold marches, print T shirts, host rally’s, and shout from mountaintops on a platform of tearing down and negativity, when equal attention could be focused on building up, on seeking the positives or on shining a spot light on the blessings of this community.

I have to ask, where was BANCO when a former President along with over one thousand individuals of ALL RACES came to town to GIVE twenty four beautiful houses? Where too, were the commissioners and mayor? Why didn’t the city sponsor a house, as is common practice? Where is BANCO while Youth Works Ministries is hosting mission groups OF ALL RACES from around the country who choose Benton Harbor to spend a week of their summer? Where is BANCO when so many positive people OF ALL RACES are giving their blood, sweat, tears, hope, faith and effort to build up a city that does nothing but cry for more?

If BANCO would focus even half of their time on showing those who repeatedly give that their efforts are appreciated, this city would begin to shine. If even half of the people dedicated to screaming injustice would work hand in hand with people OF ALL RACES who give repeatedly, this city would shine brighter.

If the strength put into a march would be put into swinging a hammer holding a paint brush or mending a metaphoric fence with their neighbor, this city could become an inspiration for positive action, rather than negative talk. BANCO, as I said, is an amazing organization. The problem I see is that no matter how much effort is put into mal intentions, the effort will always end up in vain.

Racism is indeed alive today, but it occurs in all directions. As a White American, I am sad to see an organization preach hatred toward non-blacks while many people of all colors; black, white and pink and lavender continue to work thanklessly and continue to give.

Mr. Pinkney, as a fellow Christian, I hope for the best. I also pray that you will learn in time to become more of a doer than a screamer. You will be much more successful that way.

I agree justsomewhiteguy.. I see BANCO as well just stirring the pot more and more on a daily basis. Is there a WANCO Whites against whatever BANCO stands for. I think not. That is because most races do not care about the past and are not stuck there. No one puts drugs in people hands or makes them do crime. Change has to come with in the person. Quit blaming race as a reason why african americans can not get anywhere.

Anyone can change if they want to. Obviously the people around the country that do drugs and commit crimes and live the way they do, Don't want to change. Blame something else for a change... Or come up with something new to cry about. Please stop the racial tention that you create cause no one cares about that anymore.
